Bud
A bud is a vegetative organ that represents the primordial structure of a new vegetative axis, from which leaves, branches, and/or flowers may develop.
There are several classifications of buds, though the primary distinction is based on the type of organ they generate. Specifically, they are divided into:
- Vegetative buds (wood buds): these produce only wood and leaves. They are found in stone fruit trees (e.g., apricot and cherry) as well as in pome fruit trees (apple and pear).
- Flower buds: these are reproductive buds that produce only flowers, from which fruits may eventually develop. They are typical of species such as apricot, cherry, almond, olive, peach, and plum. To enhance fruit production, it is essential to select productive formations with flower buds during pruning.
- Mixed buds: these are also reproductive buds, but they can generate leaves, branches, and flowers simultaneously. Mixed buds are found in kiwifruit, chestnut, fig, persimmon, apple, walnut, hazelnut, pear, and grapevine.
